History of the Pool:

The 1958 Festival of the Snows was held in conjunction with an appeal for money to build a new swimming pool and recreation centre at Cooma. Between October 11 and 19, it was one of the most successful community festivals held in Australia. The town's 9,000 people, including some 3,000 new Australians, raised £25,000 (pounds), assuring the local council of sufficient funds for the pool.

The generosity of the community, Edgar Kaiser and the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Authority during this festival made the construction of the swimming pool possible. The pool was officially opened on 17th October 1959 by the President of the Festival, Alderman Lindsey Hain who was also the Mayor at that time.

The pool was first redeveloped in 1995. The main pool was divided into two separate pools and painted. The toddler’s pool was also painted. A permanent cover was constructed over the main pools and a shade put over the toddler’s pool. The redevelopment was officially opened by Mayor Roger Norton on the 5th November 1995.

In 2006 Council resolved to construct new amenities directly beside the existing pool and work commenced on sourcing funding.

In 2009 the original building and amenities block were demolished and replaced by:

  • Larger and modern amenities with access directly from the pool deck into the pool.
  • New staff facilities including office with views over the entire pool deck, shower, toilet and store room.
  • New kiosk and kitchen.
  • New outdoor dining areas including one between the program pool and wading pool and another smaller one near the entrance overlooking Norris Park and Centennial Park.
  • New paving on the pool deck.
  • A new storeroom converted from the original men’s change rooms.
  • A new clubroom located on the pool deck with kitchen facilities and storeroom.
  • A new chemical storage room separated from the plant room.
  • A new larger covered area on the north eastern side of the pool which was relocated from the south eastern side.
